    CONSUMER UNION ACTIONS =PLEASE HELP=

Give Seniors, Taxpayers a Break on Drug Costs

Tell your members of Congress to give seniors and taxpayers a break and support legislation that would simplify the Medicare drug program and make it more affordable.

Don't Play Politics with Our Kids' Health

Children shouldn't be made to suffer for politics. But that is what's happening right now in Washington, as the President wants to block efforts to continue and improve a federal program that makes sure more lower-income children have health insurance.

    Help Congress Stop MRSA!

    Ask for Congressional co-sponsors to S2278, HR4214, and HR1174.
                &am p;nb sp;Money:

Help End Abusive Bank Overdraft Fees

Sick of outrageous bank fees? Help ensure that banks get your permission before reaching into your wallet.

    Haunted by Creepy Credit Cards?

Credit card companies are earning record profits by charging ghoulish interest rates, ghastly fees, and unleashing fine-print phantoms that seem to appear out of nowhere.

Help end unfair credit card company practices

Tired of credit card rip-offs? Credit card companies are earning record profits while socking consumers with unfair fees and interest rates hikes. But you can help do something about it.

We want strong financial privacy now!

The data privacy debate is cooking up in the Senate. Tell your Senator to support only the strongest financial privacy protection legislation!

Help Secure Your SSN: Act Now!

H.R. 3046 would stop the widespread and unnecessary sale, purchase and displaying of Social Security Numbers by government and businesses that has made consumers more vulnerable to identity theft.
                &am p;nb sp;Food:

    Demand Safe Imported Food!

Enough is enough! Tell Congress we are sick of putting ourselves, our children and our pets at risk from hazardous products.

Tell the USDA: tell us where our food comes from!

With a national spotlight on imported foods that could harm ourselves, our children or our pets, it is time to let the USDA know that you support mandatory country-of-origin labeling for our food!

Tell your Representative to Oppose Section 123 in the Farm Bill!

Tell your Representative to Oppose Section 123 in the Farm Bill!

Contaminated spinach, peanut butter, pet food....what next?

Our fragmented, underfunded food safety system has so many gaps, there are more holes than safety net. Since 2003, FDA has cut staff and reduced import inspections. Tell Congress to stop starving the FDA food program.

Label our meat from animal clones!

Support a federal law to ensure that meat and dairy from cloned animals is labeled so you can choose whether or not to buy it.

Tell Senate to Stop FCC's Gift to Big Media

The FCC will move swiftly to give big media what it wants--the power to further consolidate local media outlets into huge mega-media companies. But the Senate can stop it, with your help

    End FCC biases and cover-ups!

Tell the FCC to stop media consolidation! Urge Congress and the FCC to ensure that we have reasonable media rules that ensure diversity, localism and competition.

Have you ever been in this situation?

Most cell phone providers lock you into one or two year contracts with a hefty early termination fee, allowing little leeway for moving, job change, or just plain poor service that may call for wanting a new cell phone provider. Are you fed up?

    Fight for Better Local Media!

Do you want new community radio stations in your neighborhoods? By reading this note you can help us expand low power FM radio for schools, community groups, churches and local neighborhoods in your state.

    Fight flawed FCC's study!

The FCC recently release of a biased and fundamentally flawed study in favor of lifting the longstanding ban on newspaper-broadcast cross-ownership. Act now!

Take your cell phone with you!

Tell the Federal Communications Commission that you want to save money and keep your cell phone when switching companies.

Help fight media bias and power!

Tell the FCC to stop media consolidation! Be part of the official record, and urge the FCC and Congress to ensure that we have reasonable media rules that ensure diversity, localism and competition.

Reuse your cell phone and reduce toxic waste!

Tell the Federal Communications Commission that you want to protect the environment, save money and keep your cell phone when switching companies.

    Safe for the holiday!

The biggest shopping season of the year starts next month, but manufacturers continue to recall toxic toys from store shelves. How did so many dangerous imports end up in our stores? We need stronger standards and enforcement now!

    Tell Congress--don't block my email!

You elected them! They represent you! Yet some lawmakers don't want to hear from you anymore and have set up technology to block your messages! They say your messages are spam.

    Put our kid's safety first!

You may have seen recent TV coverage of the tragic death of a young boy, killed in a backover accident. The Peck family is not alone in grief. Help make the cars and trucks we all drive safer for our children.

Tired of sticker shock at the gas pump?

Automakers know how to make more efficient cars and SUVs--lowering your gasoline bill--but some have not implemented these changes and American fuel efficiency standards are out of date. Tell Congress to increase standards and reduce gasoline costs!

    TIBETAN PROTESTS =PLEASE HELP=

    WITNESS

     Dear friends,

Monks marching in the streets, buildings being burned, students staging sit-in protests, midnight raids by the military, towns and cities being sealed off...

This is Tibet after the most violent protests in nearly 20 years following pro-independence rallies commemorating the 49th anniversary of the Dalai Lama's escape from Tibet. The Chinese government reports 16 people dead while the Tibetan Government in Exile, reports at least 80 deaths. Watch videos of the protests here.

International concern is growing as a result of house-to-house raids, imposed curfews, numerous arrests, and increased media repression.

The Chinese government has reportedly placed restrictions on international media coverage in Tibet, blocking or filtering websites like Yahoo! and YouTube and censoring the local feeds of news agencies including the BBC and CNN. However, eyewitness accounts, photos, and videos (mostly from cellphones) are making their way out -- and onto the Hub

Three things you can do now:

    1) Forward this email- help keep the spotlight on Tibet;
    2) Watch the latest videos on Tibet and take action on our Tibet action center;
    3) Upload or embed - if you have or see Tibet-related video, photos or audio. You can also

Iraq Fax-in: Let's Show Congress How We Feel

March 19 marks the 5th Anniversary of Bush's disastrous invasion and occupation of Iraq - yet there is no end in sight.

The costs so far are staggering: 4,000 young Americans killed, tens of thousands maimed... 1 million Iraqis killed, millions maimed... $562 billion in tax dollars stolen from our children... $3 trillion cost to our economy through veterans care, weapons replacement, higher oil prices, and the collapsing dollar. All that in just 5 years!

We elected a Democratic Congress in 2006 to bring our troops home, but they keep giving Bush blank checks. Incredibly, Congress will soon vote on another $102 billion blank check.

On this 5th Anniversary, it is time for everyone who hates this occupation to do something about it. And we're making it as simple and effective as we can.

We're calling it the Iraq Fax-In. It's like a sit-in, only you can do it from home.
    http://iraqfaxin.com

    1. Fax an image to Congress that visually expresses how you feel about the invasion and occupation of Iraq. We've posted a few ideas, but we welcome all of yours!

    2. Email your Representatives by signing our "Out of Iraq" petition on the right side here:

And thanks for all you do to make the world a better place.

Together, we have battled them effectively, halted their fake debates, and put pressure on Bill O'Reilly for his attacks on homeless vets. And so far, over 6 million people have seen FOX Attacks.

Watch the video, send it to your friends, and then demand the media stop spreading the FOX virus. Let them know they can't keep parroting FOX's smears against Barack Obama without hearing from us. Sign the petition, and we'll make sure the heads of all the mainstream media's news divisions see it. You can even express your outrage visually by including your picture.

    WOMENS RIGHTS =PLEASE HELP=

    WITNESS
    Dear friends,

This past Saturday, March 8, marked the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, and today we bring you new videos on the Hub that feature the work of women's human rights defenders and advocates.

World Pulse Magazine sends us a series of video interviews with Kenyan women working in the wake of political crisis and the surge of violence that has left over 1,500 people dead and close to 350,000 homeless.

And last week we caught up with four women's rights activists at the Center for Women's Global Leadership's event "Human Rights for Women - Human Rights for All," which coincided with the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York.  See what they think are some of the most pressing issues for women's rights today -- only on the Hub.

Women's Voices from Kenya -- Three Featured Interviews from
    World Pulse Magazine
    .

Alberta Wambua is Deputy Programs Manager at the Gender Violence Recovery Centre of Nairobi Women's Hospital (NWH), where, to date, more than 1,600 cases of rape have officially been reported during Kenya's post-election violence.  She shares her suggestions for mediating and preventing gender-based violence in a crisis situation.

Ann Njogu is a leading Kenyan human rights advocate, lawyer and Executive Director of the Centre for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW) in Nairobi. Njogu is one of a number of politically-moderate leaders in Kenya who are speaking out despite threats of murder.

Shailja Patel, an outspoken member of a new group called Kenyans for Peace with Truth and Justice, was in Kenya during the post-election violence. The organization has secured a unanimous U.S. Senate vote to support a peaceful resolution in Kenya, and a similar bill is pending in the House of Representatives now.

Interviews from the Center of Women's Global Leadership (CWGL) Event: Human Rights for Women - Human Rights for All

These four interviews offer insights into the work done to support women's rights defenders on the ground.  The CWGL organized a powerful program to celebrate the depth and diversity of the global women's rights movement.  The event was part of the Every Human Has Rights campaign, a civil society campaign spearheaded by The Elders.  Keep checking back with the Hub to see the dozen more interviews we'll upload next week.

Mary Wandia, the Regional Women's Rights Coordinator for ActionAid in Kenya, speaks about the post-conflict reconciliation process and her role in working with women's rights leaders to ensure that "women's human rights take the center stage."

Aisha Lee Shaheed from the Global Campaign to Stop Killing and Stoning Women, talks about stopping the abuse of women in the name of tradition or religion.

Sunila Abeyesekera of INFORM in Sri Lanka discusses the Women Human Rights Defenders Campaign and why human rights work needs strategies that specifically address gender.

Lydia Alpízar, the Executive Director of The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID), says that the hard-won political commitment to uphold women's human rights needs to be backed up by real resources.

    Support Women's Rights

See CWGL's list of actions you can take to protect and promote women's rights and their in-depth list of resources, toolkits and trainings.

And Realizing Rights' Heather Grady invites you to join the Every Human Has Rights Campaign - and to tell your story on the Hub!

"Get Big Money Out of Politics" =PLEASE SIGN=

    Hi Friends,

I have just read and signed the petition: "Get Big Money Out of Politics"

    http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/207298406

    Thanks!

Wealthy campaign contributors and their lobbyists wield too much power in our political system. The influence of these big-money interests is a major reason that we cannot find solutions or even have a reasonable debate about health care, jobs, global warming, and many other pressing issues.

If we want to put the power of our democracy fully back into the hands of all Americans, then we need to change the way that we finance elections from top to bottom.

Under a full public financing system -- such as those already in use in Maine, Arizona, and Connecticut, and the one proposed for Congress -- qualified candidates who swear off special interest money and agree to spending limits receive public funds to run a competitive campaign.

Help get the influence of big money out of politics by urging Congress to support the Fair Elections Now Act for full public financing of congressional elections.

HELP STOP THE DRILLING =PLEASE SIGN=

    Dear Friends,

A wildlife refuge in Alaska is at risk of being irreparably damaged by oil drilling.

Please speak up opposing this move by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, before the March 25 comment deadline.

The Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge, home to millions of migratory birds as well as grizzlies, wolves and Dall sheep, is under threat.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to trade away 110,000 acres of prime refuge wildlife habitat - along with another 97,000 acres of subsurface mineral rights - for oil and gas exploration and development.

We still have time to stop this ill-conceived plan. Until March 25, Americans can speak out in support of the native people who rely on the land, water, and wildlife resources of Yukon Flats by opposing this unwise use of the refuge's irreplaceable habitat.

Click here to send a message to the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Taking action today makes you eligible to win a trip for two to Alaska.

Your voice is key. Even the Fish and Wildlife Service has admitted in the past that oil drilling is not compatible with the purposes for which this refuge was established.
But they need to be reminded.

Drilling means roads, pipelines, oil spills and pollution - all of which will threaten the habitats of the moose, bear, caribou and birds that depend on this place. Native peoples living off of the land could be irreversibly affected by oil production in the area.

Time is running out. We have only until March 25 to let the Fish and Wildlife Service know that Americans do not support oil production in this Alaskan refuge!

Click here to send your message.

These public lands must be protected - and concerned Americans like you and me need to step up to save them. Together we can work to protect wild Alaskan lands from oil development.

    Cruelty by US Soldiers [5 Video's] =MUST WATCH=

    CRUEL US SOLDIERS =MUST WATCH=

Puppy.jpgThe Digg story "U.S. Soldier throws puppy off cliff" had, at last count, 5,527 votes. Digg commenters, never a demure crowd, aren't holding back their rage. One comment, itself voted for 540 times, reads "Wow. I hope he got shot in the face later that day." This video exposes something about the dehumanization of American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan that most of us don't want to think about. Here are five more videos that show just how far gone our troops are. A warning: These videos are explicit and -- with the known correlation between violence toward animals and violence toward other humans in mind -- savagely disheartening.
