Palin should step down, conservative commentator says 26 Sep 2008 Prominent conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, an early supporter of Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin, said Friday recent interviews have shown the Alaska governor is "out of her league" and should leave the GOP presidential ticket for the good of the party. The criticism in Parker's Friday column is the latest in a recent string of negative assessments toward the McCain-Palin candidacy from prominent conservatives.

Palin to return donations from tainted politicians 26 Sep 2008 Gov. Sarah Palin swept into office as an avowed outsider, a claim that helped her land the GOP vice presidential nomination. The woman touted by Republican nominee John McCain as a reformer said late Thursday that she will donate to charity more than $1,000 in campaign contributions from two Alaska politicians implicated in a sprawling federal corruption probe. Palin is also giving back $1,000 from the wife of one of the men. The move came a few hours after The Associated Press reported that Palin had accepted the money during her successful 2006 run for governor.

House clears huge defense bill, sends it to Senate 24 Sep 2008 Bowing to President [sic] Bush's demands, the House passed a mammoth package for the Pentagon on Wednesday that contains billions of dollars for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a pay raise for troops. Lies, Damned Lies, and How Much Should Obama Lie?

Lies are everywhere. It's a veritable lying epidemic out there in campaign America. Yet, it was still surprising when corporate writer Farhad Manjoo suggested that Barack Obama's problem in the campaign was that he wasn't lying enough.

Perhaps it is quaint, but at AlterNet we are in favor of fewer lies, not more. And we won't lie. This article is in part an appeal to support us financially, to help us fight back against the recent plague of lies.

Manjoo works for Slate, which is owned by the Washington Post Company, owner of Newsweek and a media empire that stretches from TV channels to children's schoolbooks.

Manjoo catalogued many of the lies strewn about by John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin, and by Obama. Manjoo concluded that McCain was out-lying Obama by more than 2-1, and that Obama had refrained from the big whoppers. Hence, according to Manjoo, "McCain has lied more often and more outrageously than Obama."

Big Oil.  Is there any limit to their greed?  

This summer, we learned that Exxon reported $11.7 billion in pure profit in only 90 days at the height of the oil price bubble - more than any U.S. corporation in history. With record-shattering profits like these, is it any wonder that most Americans are struggling with the price at the pump?

Stop Paulson's Plunder

George Bush wants taxpayers to give Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson a $700 billion blank check - $2,333 for every many, woman, and child -to bail out Wall Street for its reckless speculation and greed. That's on top of $1.1 trillion for other recent bailouts, including A.I.G., Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Bear Stearns. 

The Paulson Plan is a total outrage with no restrictions, no accountability, and no repair of the underlying problem of foreclosures on fraudulent mortgages. Each of Bush's previous bailouts was sold as a cure for the financial crisis, but each had little effect. The Paulson Plan achieves only one goal with certainty: stealing from the middle class to protect the rich.

The current financial crisis is the direct result of 28 years of rightwing Republican deregulation, corruption, and greed, which became fatally toxic under Bush-Cheney and the Republican Congress.

Congress must reject Paulson's Plunder and enact a plan with these progressive principles from the Backbone Campaign:

• The people who caused the problem or profited most should pay for it
• Re-regulate to prevent this from happening again
• Include Main Street in the bailout and invest in a new productive economy
